Yesterday a friend of mine called me from Edinburgh police station. She was distraught and fighting back tears as she told me that she had been followed home from work and raped by a man with dark hair. Tonight we stormed the London underground, around 30 of us in total dressed in balaclavas. We lay waste to the male commuters with dark hair, even remembering to give a good hiding to those wearing hats just in case they too possessed brunette colourings. We did this to show our outrage at what happened and to ensure the mystery man didn’t attack again.
How ridiculous an idea! Almost as ridiculous as justifying the victimisation and assault of random passers by in Stockholm. Carried out due to the masked men’s belief they were immigrants and justified on the basis that women were assaulted in Cologne during New Year celebrations. An orchestrated event which has been blamed on a faceless group of people by a media who capitalize on distrust and paranoia. Encouraging the hatred of anyone unable to defend themselves and making wild accusations aimed at striking fear into the hearts of people who trust that the media is honest.
Today it was even suggested to me that this and other similar racially motivated attacks were an inevitable consequence of attempting to integrate numerous nationalities. Funny thing is I see people who are different to me everyday, that believe different things, eat different food and wear different clothes. I don’t think it would be acceptable for me to just walk around the street hitting everyone I see. What if all the ex-pats in Spain one day got called into school to hear the terrible news that their children had been attacked on the way home just because they were English.
Is this really the world we want to live in? Where someone’s innocent sister is stabbed and so a child’s mother is stabbed and killed in return. Imagine coming home from work excited to rub the belly of your pregnant wife, speak softly to the unborn child you have longed for all your life and finally finish assembling that flat pack cot which only came with instructions in Chinese. But instead you turn the corner hearing the sound of sirens growing louder, a panic comes over you and your worst fears are realised when you are greeted on your doorstep by a police officer. Your wife is critically ill in hospital and your baby is dead, a group of men jumped her whilst she was out shopping for your tea and stamped on her stomach until she miscarried and then left her to die soaked in the blood of her unborn child. All because she was wearing a head scarf. All because another group of people carried bombs which killed someone who these attackers didn’t even know, all because an unseen enemy raided the bomber’s home village at night and killed their family in the quest to find some who had killed someone that their commanders went to school with, all because… Well the story goes on. And it will go on until we stop and think. Do we want our children to live in this world? do we want to live in this world? What can we do to change it? Assaulting innocent people is not the answer.
